POSTPALAIS
MULTI-RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
VIENNA, AUSTRIA 2015
DESIGN
The listed building complex of the former main post office in the city center of Vienna consists of five components of different ages, which were rebuilt in 1849-54 to the plans of the court architect Paul Sprenger and provided with a uniform façade.
The building is to undergo a comprehensive renovation that is gentle on the existing environment and has been refurbished by the k.u.k. Develop a postal center for the lively city quarter. A mix of residential, hotel and restaurant uses is planned. The ground floor zone opens to the city space through gallery-like uses and a semi-public passage through the Dominikanerhof.
As part of the renovation, the attic will be expanded and a new four-storey underground car park will be built under the Dominkanerhof. The façades of the Dominikanerhof are set aside on two sides by conservatories that extend the use on the ground floor – the hotel restaurant and spa. The Herzmanskysaal in the Auwinkelhof is converted into the hotel restaurant. The internal historical construction is being renovated and staged. The two-storey basement of the Auwinkelhof houses seminar rooms and adjoining rooms of the hotel.
These slumbering buildings are being opened up to a modern, urban audience. The ground floor zone, previously unused, is activated. The new self-image of the building not only improves the quality of living on site, it also creates a new center in the middle of Vienna.
